In a strategic move to shield Nigerian farmers from the adverse effects of climate change, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Women Farmers Advancement Network (WOFAN) have joined forces to enhance climate resilience in the agricultural sector.
During a meeting at NiMet headquarters on March 3, 2025, the agency’s Director General and CEO, Prof. Charles Anosike, lauded WOFAN’s dedication to smallholder farmers, particularly women and youth. He highlighted the organization’s extensive network of nearly 700,000 farmers and its role in training agricultural extension workers.
“I consider this partnership a major achievement because of the potential positive impact on agricultural yields in Nigeria,” Prof. Anosike stated. He emphasized that following NiMet’s Seasonal Climate Prediction release in February, the collaboration is timely, as it will help disseminate critical weather information directly to farmers.
“Our work at NiMet won’t be complete if our forecasts don’t reach those who need them most,” he added. “With this partnership, we can equip farmers with the knowledge to mitigate climate risks, manage pests, and prevent crop losses.”
WOFAN’s founder, Hajia Salamatu Garba, commended NiMet’s consistency in providing climate data, noting that the partnership would enhance direct access to weather information. “We have always relied on NiMet’s data, but this collaboration will make it even more effective,” she said.
To formalize the collaboration, NiMet and WOFAN will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to guide their joint efforts in supporting Nigerian farmers.
