The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a farmer along Agunla Farm Road, Ayede-Ogbese, in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, told journalists that the incident was reported by concerned residents.
According to him, preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased, identified as Ben Daniels, and another man, James Unekwu, were riding a motorcycle to their farm camp when they were allegedly attacked by unknown gunmen.
“Preliminary findings show that the two men were on a motorcycle heading to their camp when they were accosted by armed men,” Jimoh said.
He explained that Unekwu managed to escape from the attackers, while Daniels was shot dead and his body dumped by the roadside.
Police operatives were immediately deployed to the scene, where the corpse was recovered and deposited at a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
“Unekwu is currently in police protective custody as tensions rise over a possible conspiracy, while investigations continue,” Jimoh added.
The police spokesperson urged residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their hands.
“The command urges residents to remain calm and refrain from blocking highways or engaging in activities that may disrupt public peace, as such actions infringe on the rights of other road users.
“The grievances of concerned persons are noted, and due process will be followed to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
“The Commissioner of Police assures the good people of Ondo State that the command remains resolute in combating crime and criminality. Residents are encouraged to continue their lawful activities without fear,” he said.
Meanwhile, youths in Ayede-Ogbese community barricaded the busy Akure/Owo highway, grounding vehicular movement as they protested what they described as recurring killings in the area.
The protest caused significant traffic disruption, with commuters stranded for hours before security operatives intervened to restore normalcy.
Police authorities say investigations are ongoing to track down those responsible for the attack.
