In a decisive operation, the Mining Marshals have successfully dismantled a heavily fortified illegal mining site in Rafin Gabas, Kokona Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
According to a statement issued by Segun Tomori, Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, the illegal site had long operated beyond the reach of law enforcement, allegedly shielded by compromised security personnel.
Through a well-coordinated effort, the Mining Marshals penetrated the stronghold, leading to the arrest of three foreign nationals involved in illicit mining activities. Several other suspects managed to escape, reportedly aided by corrupt security operatives.
Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, hailed the raid as a significant victory in the government’s intensified fight against illegal mining.
“This is a crucial milestone in our relentless effort to sanitize the mining sector. We remain committed to dismantling illegal mining networks and ensuring accountability,” Alake affirmed.
Commander of the Mining Marshals, ACC John Attah Onoja, confirmed that the site has been sealed off following the operation. He further disclosed that a manhunt is underway for the fleeing suspects, with investigations ongoing to expose any security operatives complicit in the crime.
Additionally, ACC Onoja revealed that the company behind the illegal operation, along with some fugitive suspects, already face criminal charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Marking the Mining Marshals’ one-year anniversary, Minister Alake reiterated the administration’s unwavering commitment to eradicating illegal mining. Plans are in motion to enhance enforcement capabilities through satellite monitoring, procurement of advanced equipment, and other strategic interventions.
