The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA) has issued a 15-day flood alert for 198 local government areas across 30 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), warning residents to brace for potential flooding between August 7 and 21, 2025.
According to the agency, 832 communities are at varying risk levels categorised as very high, high, or moderate based on rainfall intensity and local topography.

The very high-risk states include Adamawa, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Delta, Gombe, Kebbi, Kogi, Lagos, Niger, Ogun, Rivers, Yobe, and Zamfara. High to moderate-risk states are Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Cross River, Ebonyi, Edo, the FCT, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kwara, Nasarawa, Ondo, Plateau, Sokoto, and Taraba.

NiHSA also warned of potential disruptions to over 100 major transportation routes in flood-prone areas.

“Residents in vulnerable areas must remain vigilant, follow early warning directives, and work closely with emergency response agencies,” NiHSA stated. The agency urged communities to prepare evacuation plans and closely monitor its weekly state-level forecasts for updates.

NiHSA Director General, Umar Mohammed, stressed the need for proactive measures from state governments, local authorities, and the public, saying the alert aligns with the agency’s mandate to safeguard lives and property.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has already reported severe impacts from flooding this year, with 191 lives lost and 94 people missing across affected regions. Niger State recorded the highest fatalities at 163, followed by Adamawa with 26 deaths. Borno and Gombe states each recorded one fatality.

So far in 2025, floods have affected 134,435 people across 20 states and 47 local councils, displacing 48,056 individuals, injuring 239, destroying 9,499 houses, and damaging 9,450 farmlands.
