The ancient city of Ibadan came to a solemn standstill as dignitaries, traditional rulers, and residents paid their last respects to the late Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who was laid to rest in a ceremony rich with culture, reverence, and reflection.

The funeral service, held at the historic Cathedral Church of Saint Peter, Aremo, was attended by notable personalities from across Nigeria and beyond. His coffin, draped in the national flag and adorned with military regalia, symbolised the profound respect the nation holds for his service and leadership.

Delivering the sermon, Archbishop Williams Aladekugbe of the Ibadan Anglican Province described the late monarch as a pillar of peace, unity, and cultural heritage, who embodied the spirit of servant leadership.

“Oba Owolabi Olakulehin was more than a king; he was a father, a guide, and a beacon of hope. His reign was marked by wisdom, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to justice,” the bishop said.

Archbishop Aladekugbe praised the monarch’s efforts in promoting inter-group harmony and fostering an inclusive Ibadan society, even amid the pressures of modernization.

He urged Nigerians to emulate the late king’s values, adding, “As we mourn his passing, let us carry forward his legacy of love, peace, and unity.”

With Oba Olakulehin’s burial now complete, attention has shifted to the enthronement of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, with former Oyo State Governor Rashidi Ladoja poised to ascend the throne following his nomination and endorsement by the kingmakers.

Preparations are already underway by the Oyo State government, the traditional council, and the emerging ruling house, marking the beginning of a new era for Ibadanland.
