he Chairman of the House Committee on Commerce, Hon. Ahmed Munir, has reiterated the commitment of the 10th House of Representatives to transparency, inclusiveness, and economic reform-driven legislation, as part of efforts to accelerate Nigeria’s economic development.
Speaking during a public hearing on ten key bills in Abuja, Mr. Munir emphasized that the House remains focused on delivering people-oriented laws that address current economic realities and institutional gaps.
“The 10th Assembly is committed to ensuring that every piece of legislation is inclusive and reflects the genuine aspirations of the Nigerian people,” Munir said.
Climate-Resilient Commerce Bill Among Highlights
Among the major proposals reviewed was the Bill for an Act to Establish Climate Resilient Commerce in Nigeria (HB. 2206). The bill seeks to create a policy framework for promoting sustainable economic growth and reducing business exposure to climate-related risks.
According to Munir, the bill is timely and aligns with global climate action goals, positioning Nigeria to leverage international incentives and partnerships for environmental sustainability.
“We must prepare our economy for the challenges and opportunities of a climate-conscious world,” he stated.
Diverse Legislative Agenda to Strengthen Institutions
The Committee reviewed a wide range of bills aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s economic ecosystem and professional regulation, including:
- Chartered Institute of Nigerian Universities Professional Administrators Bill
- Institute of Chartered Biochemists and Molecular Biologists Bill
- Chartered Institute of Mortgage Bankers and Brokers Bill
- Chartered Institute of Entrepreneurship Consultants Bill
- Chartered Institute of Enterprise Risk Management of Nigeria Bill
- Amendments to the Nigerian Export Promotion Council Act
- Amendments to the National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria Act 2003
- These proposed laws aim to modernize outdated regulatory frameworks, create professional standards, and boost operational efficiency across key sectors.
Public Participation and Transparency in Lawmaking
Mr. Munir explained that the hearing served as a platform for citizens, stakeholders, and industry experts to make contributions that will enrich the legislative process.
“Laws are best made when the people they are meant to serve have a voice in shaping them,” he said.
He praised the Tinubu administration for recent economic progress, including a 3.9% GDP growth rate and enhanced revenue mobilization, while calling for stronger efforts to ensure macroeconomic gains are felt at the grassroots level.
Addressing Food Insecurity and Inflation
To sustain growth, Munir emphasized the need for expanded social protection schemes, transparency in public finance, aggressive efforts to tackle food insecurity and strategic reforms to address inflation and trade barriers.
He concluded by affirming that the 10th National Assembly remains a “People’s Parliament,” dedicated to openness, national unity, and inclusive governance.
