Portuguese legend and Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will mark his final appearance on football’s biggest stage, signaling the approaching end of one of the most storied careers in the sport’s history.
The 40-year-old Al Nassr forward revealed during a video appearance at a global tourism and investment forum in Saudi Arabia that he plans to retire from professional football “in one or two years.”
When asked if the 2026 World Cup would be his last, Ronaldo said, “Definitely, yes. I’m going to be 41 years old, and I think it will be the moment. Soon for me means in 10 years… No, I’m joking. I feel very good at this moment. I still score goals, I feel quick and sharp. But let’s be honest — what I mean by soon is probably one or two years.”
Ronaldo, who has scored over 950 career goals, reflected on his remarkable journey spanning more than 25 years at the top level.
Since joining Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr in 2023, he has continued to deliver standout performances while embracing his role as a global ambassador for the sport.
“I gave everything for football,” Ronaldo said. “I’ve been in the game for 25 years. I did everything — I have many records in different scenarios, with clubs and also with the national team. I’m really proud. So let’s enjoy the moment and live the moment.”
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner also shared thoughts about his son, Cristiano Jr., who currently plays for Portugal’s U-16 team.
“As human beings, we don’t always want anyone to be better than us,” Ronaldo admitted. “But I wish my kids will be better than me. Be happy, be free, don’t be under the pressure of your daddy. I will always be his support.”
If selected, the 2026 tournament in North America would be Ronaldo’s sixth World Cup appearance, extending his record as one of football’s longest-serving international players. His closest attempt to lift the trophy came in 2006, when Portugal reached the semi-finals.
The Portuguese national team is close to securing qualification for the tournament and could seal their spot with a win over Ireland this week.
