The Nigeria Governors Forum in collaboration with Centre for Democracy and Development have commence deliberations on how to end insurgency in the country.
At the event in Abuja, the chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum and Governor of Ekiti State Dr Kayode Fayemi expressed concern about the alarming rate of insecurity in Nigeria and called on Non state actors to help in proffering a lasting solution to the security challenges ravaging the country.
“ Following the launch of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum Peace and Inclusive Security Initiative (PISI ) in July 2021, the NGF is making efforts to create a fora to share ideas on how every stakeholder can contribute to the work of restoring peace and security of the nation”. Fayemi explained.
Governor Fayemi stressed that the forum would also provide an opportunity for various stakeholders to express their views and make policy recommendations on issues that would address insecurity in the country.
While given an insight on the findings of the security report by the Centre for Democracy and Development Professor Okey Ibamu revealed that there are over one hundred bandits groups that are operating in the North West region constituting about thirty thousand militants and therefore advocated for the increase in the capacity of security agencies.
“ These groups consist of foreigners that have enter the country because of the porous borders to distort the peaceful development of the country.” Professor Ibamu.
In a panel discussion, the deputy Governor of Plateau state, Professor Sunny Tyoden attributed the crisis in the state to land dispute and ownership interest and maintained that the administration of Governor Simon Lalong had put measures in place to bring a lasting peace in the state.
“ When we came to power seven years ago, we have been making efforts to provide a lasting peace by consulting with people of various communities for peace to thrive”.
The British High Commissioner to Nigeria Catriona Laign represented by Mr. Jonathan Bacon commended the Governors for the initiative and pledged to strengthen their relationship through effective security collaboration.
The meeting also discussed security challenges across the six geo-political zone and role of security agencies in managing security across the states
