The National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, has called on the National Assembly to put legislative machineries in place and expunge the controversial Clause of Section 84, Sub-section 14 in the Electoral Act as advised by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The President of the Council, Comrade Solomon Adodo made the call during a news briefing in Abuja.
He explained that over seventy-five percent of those affected by the law were youths serving as appointees to local government Chairmen, Governors, the President and even these legislators.
Comrade Adodo stressed that the law, if allowed to stand, would disenfranchise mostly youths and make nonsense of the “Not Too Young To Run” Act.
“Let us serve a notice that the NYCN is interested in this matter, in that we are disenchanted to learn that the representatives of our people could involve in open dribbles with a very sincere President who is only acting in the interest of the posterity of democracy in Nigeria. To this end therefore, we call on both Chambers of the National Assembly immediately expedite actions to expunge the said section 84(12) within 48hours of their sitting. The National Assembly should further be placed on notice that commencing from Tuesday 15th March 2022, the National Youth Council of Nigeria and her Civil Society Partners will embark on a mass protest till our demands are met. We shall keep this matter alive till the needful is done and democracy served.”
The Youth Council President threatened that the Group and other Civil Society Partners would embark on a mass protest till their demands were met.
