The House of Representatives has urged the federal ministry of education to liaise with relevant government agencies to ensure automatic employment of first class graduates of Nigerian institutions.
This was sequel to a motion by a member from Imo State, Mr Emeka Chinedu at plenary.
The lawmaker expressed concern with the growing rate at which employable first class graduates of universities in Nigeria are going jobless or leaving the country in droves.
This according to him was despite the fact that graduates with lower grades get the option of first refusal in getting jobs due to their connections.
Chinedu observed that automatic offers for first-class graduates would only be a source of motivation for students to work harder, but maximize their potential in preparation for their different economic growth.
Contributing to the debate, the chairman house committee on Army Abdurrazak Namdaz, argued that a first class graduate might not not necessarily be the most qualified person for a particular job.
For a member from Katsina State, Babangida Ibrahim, the policy, if passed would encourage academic corruption.
The speaker Mr Femi Gbajabiamila however, observed that the policy would produce the best out of students as well as address the situation where by graduates of lower qualification are employed leaving those with higher qualification jobless.
The speaker then put it to vote, at the end of which majority of the lawmakers supported the motion.
