Federal Government in collaboration with other Women Development Groups are to launch a social mobilization and sensitization Initiative tagged “Women Reconnect for New Nigeria Initiative” to galvanize women to participate fully in the processes leading to the 2023 general elections.
At a news conference on the status of women inclusion and participation in governance at all levels of national development in Abuja, the Minister of women Affairs, Dame Pauline Tallen explained that the target was to reinvigorate efforts of women towards inclusion in governance.
She said it was also to raise the bar on the demand for women participation in Leadership positions.
She emphasized that Women would no longer support or vote blindly in the coming 2023 general elections.
The Minister stressed that only Political Parties that fill in at least 35% women representation in both elective and appointive positions and provide for women in their party structures and manifestoes would be supported.
“Nigerian women say enough is enough, we must change the narratives. We can no longer fold our arms and be used to canvass for votes. Going forward, we must sign a pact with prospective candidates. Nigerian Women are still bitter at their recent shoddy treatment by the Legislature when the 5-Gender Related Bills were rejected despite assurances. It is no longer business as usual. Those who have ears should listen and make amends.” She said
Dame Pauline Tallen also called for the reformation of political structures, which excludes women from participating in decision-making, and make them amenable to the principles of equality and social justice.
She stressed that the ministry had started the process of building a Dashboard to display all the pro-women projects initiated and executed by the 36 States of the Federation as this would play a crucial role in determining the women’s support, especially for those serving who wish to continue in Office or seeking higher office.
