The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has detained a Twitter user, Ameerah Sufyan, who tweeted that she was kidnapped alongside 16 other Abuja residents.
Sufyan, who took to her Twitter handle on Monday, apologised, saying she deliberately misled the public.
Sufyan claimed on Twitter that she and 16 others, including three pregnant women and two kids, were abducted at gunpoint from different parts of Abuja by men in police uniforms.
Three days later, the FCT police command, in a statement, disclosed that she had been found.
Quoting her June 14 tweet, Sufyan wrote on Monday, “Good day all, I would like to formally apologise to the general public, to the whole police department, and my friends and family for misleading them with the below tweet. Nothing of such happened and it was all just my delusions and negative thinking.
I intentionally took myself out of our house, went to these locations, entered bushes and dehydrated and starved myself for four days just like that; there was no kidnapping, nothing at all. I truly apologise and please pray for me, I need it.”
When our correspondent reached out to the police concerning the reported release of Sufyan, and her latest tweet, the FCT command said it was investigating the matter.
The command’s Deputy Public Relations Officer, Omotayo Oduniyi, said any development would be communicated to the press.
Oduniyi later informed our correspondent that Sufyan “is still in police custody and investigation continues.”
