Comrade Bassey Itang of the Nigeria Television Authority, NTA, has emerged the Chairperson of the FCT Chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ.
Comrade Itang became unopposed after the incumbent Chairperson, Comrade Ann Daniel withdrew from the contest following controversies that emanated after the suspension of the election when it was initially scheduled.
For the position of Vice Chairperson, Comrade Rebecca Ukpevo of the Ministry of Information polled a total of one hundred and twenty-three votes to defeat her opponent, Comrade Francisca Ogar of the Independent Television who scored one hundred and fifteen votes.
The election for the FCT Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ was initially scheduled to hold on the 20th of January.
However, many Women Journalists became aggrieved after the election was suspended over the mode of identification for the exercise.
The controversy led to the formation of two caretaker committees, one by aggrieved members and the other, by the National leadership of NAWOJ, which eventually held the election.
In an interview, the NAWOJ Vice President Zone D, Mrs. Chizoba Ogbeche, who supervised the election, stressed that the constitution must be followed at all times to ensure the smooth running of the Association.
Also, the Chairman, NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Patrick Osadebanwe stated that NAWOJ remained an offshoot of the Union and advised members of the Association to pay their mandatory professional fees and obtain their identity cards.
The new Chairperson of the FCT NAWOJ, Comrade Bassey Itang gave an assurance that she would strive to uphold the values and principles of the Association.
The Chairperson of the Caretaker Committee, Comrade Oluwakemi Kindness said her Committee succeeded because it engaged in constant consultations.
Most Women Journalists who spoke with Radio Nigeria, expressed happiness for the eventual success of the election.
