NAWOJ FCT Distributes Menstrual Pads and Writing Materials to Students in FCT
The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) FCT Chapter has taken a significant step towards improving menstrual hygiene and curbing gender-based violence by distributing free sanitary pads and writing materials to students at Junior Secondary School 1, Jabi, in the Federal Capital Territory.
During the sensitization program, NAWOJ FCT Chairperson, Comrade Bassey Ita Ikpang, urged all levels of government to initiate policies that would make menstrual pads free and subsidize their high production costs. “If condoms are free, menstrual pads should be too,” she emphasized, highlighting the essential nature of menstrual hygiene products.
Comrade Ikpang also stressed the importance of educating both boys and girls about gender-based violence, ensuring they are equipped with the knowledge to combat it effectively.
The Vice Principal of the school, Rabiatu Abdullahi, commended NAWOJ FCT for their intervention and called on other women’s groups to follow suit. Guest speakers from ITV and Abuja Royal Women Empowerment Initiatives addressed the students on menstrual hygiene and gender-based violence.
The event which was supported by little angels sanitary pads , concluded with the distribution of menstrual pads to all girl students, while boys received exercise books. The students expressed their gratitude and called on the government to make menstrual pads free.
Let’s advocate for accessible menstrual hygiene products and continue to support initiatives that improve the lives of our girls.
