The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has raised the alarm over intensifying hostilities in the Gulf region, cautioning that the crisis could trigger far-reaching consequences for global peace, energy markets, trade and food security—particularly for Africa and other vulnerable regions.

In a statement issued under the chairmanship of Julius Maada Bio, President of Sierra Leone, the regional bloc said it aligns fully with the position earlier expressed by the African Union Commission, which voiced concern over rising military tensions.

ECOWAS warned that the escalation of military action in the Gulf risks widening instability across the Middle East, with knock-on effects worldwide.

“The intensification of military action risks widening instability in the Middle East, with serious consequences for international peace and security in general and for global energy markets, trade, and food supply chains—especially for Africa and other vulnerable regions,” the statement said.

The bloc stressed that Africa’s heavy reliance on global supply chains exposes the continent to indirect economic and humanitarian shocks should the situation deteriorate further.

Calling for de-escalation, ECOWAS urged all parties to exercise restraint and adhere strictly to international legal norms.

“ECOWAS therefore calls on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and to act in full compliance with the United Nations Charter and international law, particularly the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the peaceful settlement of disputes,” it added.

The organisation also emphasised that the protection of civilians and critical infrastructure must remain a priority amid the unfolding crisis.

Reinforcing the need for diplomacy, ECOWAS called for renewed engagement through established international and regional mechanisms to de-escalate tensions.

“ECOWAS further calls for renewed diplomatic efforts within established international and regional frameworks to promote dialogue, reduce tensions and restore stability,” the statement noted.

Reaffirming its commitment to multilateralism, the West African bloc endorsed the African Union’s stance and reiterated its support for peaceful conflict resolution, describing dialogue and international cooperation as the most effective pathway to sustainable peace.
