Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Brazil forward Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a deal worth £62.5 million, subject to visa approval and final registration.
The 26-year-old striker successfully completed his medical last week, with both clubs releasing official statements on Sunday afternoon. Cunha now becomes new manager Ruben Amorim’s first signing of the summer, as United begin a major squad overhaul following a disappointing 15th-place finish in the Premier League.
Cunha joined Wolves from Atletico Madrid in January 2023, initially on loan before completing a permanent switch for €40 million (£35 million) at the end of that season. During his two-and-a-half-year spell at Molineux, the Brazilian forward netted 33 goals in 92 appearances, establishing himself as a key attacking threat.
In a statement, Manchester United said:
“Manchester United has reached agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers for the signing of Matheus Cunha. The Brazilian forward’s arrival is subject to visa and registration. The 26-year-old has 13 senior caps for Brazil and has made 270 club appearances, scoring 72 goals across the English, Spanish, German, and Swiss top flights. Everyone at Manchester United looks forward to welcoming Matheus to Old Trafford.”
Sources indicate United will pay the fee in three instalments of £20.85 million over the next two years, after Wolves reportedly turned down an offer to spread payments over five years. Cunha is expected to join up with the United squad ahead of their pre-season tour and could be in line to inherit Marcus Rashford’s iconic No. 10 shirt.
The signing marks a significant show of intent from Manchester United as Ruben Amorim begins to reshape the squad in his image, with further additions expected in the coming weeks.
