Group Tasks Political Office Holders On Mental Health Checks

The National Assembly has been advised to come up with a legislation that will ensure compulsory mental health checks for aspiring political office holders.

The Executive Director, African Youths Initiative On Crime Prevention, Mr. Chris Ibe gave the advice during a two-day Youth Summit on Drug and Substance Abuse Prevention in Abuja.

He also said that youths from across the Country were being trained and sensitized on the need to avoid drug abuse to enable them make the right decision during next year’s elections.

Recently, the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, Ndlea, called for mental health checks for political office holders before taking the mantle of leadership.

To this effect, the Executive Director of the African Youths Initiative On Crime Prevention, Mr. Chris Ibe stressed that it could only be achieved through a legislation.

The Director General, Bureau of Public Service Reforms, Dr. Dasuki Ibrahim said the Service had made it difficult for people in public service to engage in corrupt practices.

Dr. Ibrahim also explained that the Service had carried out investigations and the results had led to the elimination of ghost workers.

A representative of the Minister of Health, Professor Ibrahim… said over thirty percent of young people still abuse drugs and that the Ministry had established drug rehabilitation centers across the six geopolitical zones of the Country.

The Director General of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, General Mohammed Marwa represented by Mr. Baba Ali Mohammed advised youths to avoid drug abuse as it destroys the body system.

The theme of the event is: “Strengthening prevention and promoting community partnership”.
