The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the fatal road accident that claimed the lives of two associates of former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, is currently in police custody.

The tragic incident occurred on Monday along the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, while Joshua was being driven with two friends, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami. The Lexus SUV reportedly rammed into a stationary truck, killing Ayodele and Ghami instantly. Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries.

Confirming developments in the case, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ogun State, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said investigations were ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

“The driver of the Lexus SUV is currently in custody in connection with the Anthony Joshua accident case.

Investigations are ongoing to ascertain both the immediate and remote causes of the accident,” Babaseyi stated.

Joshua was treated at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, and was discharged late Wednesday after doctors confirmed he was clinically fit to continue recovery at home.

Sources disclosed that the former heavyweight champion, accompanied by his mother, visited a Lagos funeral home on Thursday to pay their final respects to Ayodele and Ghami. The bodies of the deceased were reportedly being prepared for repatriation later that night.

Meanwhile, the Lagos and Ogun state governments have expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims. In a joint statement issued by the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, and the Special Adviser to the Ogun State Governor on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, the states described the incident as a painful loss.

“We pray the Almighty grants the repose of their souls and provides their families and loved ones with the fortitude to bear this very sad and painful loss,” the statement read.

The governors of both states—Dapo Abiodun of Ogun and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos—also acknowledged the public’s concern and solidarity following the accident.

“They deeply appreciate the outpouring of love and affection following this very unfortunate incident,” the statement added.

The governments further thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what they described as his “fatherly support” during the period and commended the medical team at Lagoon Hospital for their professionalism.

“The quality of care and professionalism displayed by the doctors and medical personnel is truly commendable,” the statement concluded.

Police investigations into the crash are continuing.
