The Akire of Ikire in Osun State, Oba Olatunde Falabi, has passed away at the age of 91.

The Chairperson of Irewole Local Government, Dr. Esther Okunola, confirmed the monarch’s death in a statement released in Osogbo on Monday. Palace sources disclosed that the royal father died over the weekend after a brief illness.

In her condolence message, Okunola described the monarch’s death as the “fall of a great elephant,” noting that Ikire and the entire Irewole Local Government had lost a revered leader whose wisdom, courage, and guidance fostered unity and progress.

She highlighted that Oba Falabi’s reign was defined by peace, cultural preservation, and steady development in Ikire. According to her, his leadership strengthened traditional institutions and promoted harmony among his people.

“Indeed, when a mighty elephant falls, the forest trembles. Kabiyesi lived a life of honour and service. His legacy will continue to inspire generations,” she said, while extending condolences to the royal family, the Akire Traditional Council, and the people of Ikire.

Oba Falabi, a trained pharmacist, was installed as Akire of Ikire in May 1993 and reigned for over three decades. During his time on the throne, Ikire experienced notable economic and political growth, including the establishment of the College of Humanities campus of Osun State University in the town.

His reign also coincided with the rise of prominent indigenes such as Benedict Alabi, who served as Deputy Governor of Osun State.
