President Bola Tinubu will this week swear in Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP), following the unanimous endorsement of his appointment by the Nigeria Police Council.

The swearing-in ceremony will take place during a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting scheduled for the same day, according to the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

“The swearing-in ceremony will take place during the Federal Executive Council meeting scheduled for the same day,” Onanuga said in a statement released after the council’s meeting at the State House in Abuja.

The meeting was presided over by President Tinubu and attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors, and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Hashimu Argungu, in line with constitutional provisions.

Other top government officials present included the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam; Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; and Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Esther Walson-Jack.

According to Onanuga, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu spoke highly of Disu, praising his exemplary service, particularly during his tenure as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos.

“Governor Sanwo-Olu commended Disu for his outstanding performance in crime control and public safety,” the statement noted.

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule also endorsed the appointment, describing Disu as a seasoned officer whose elevation was based on an excellent career record.

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, a former Rivers State governor, recalled Disu’s service in Rivers State as Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department and the anti-kidnapping unit.

“Disu demonstrated exceptional professionalism and effectiveness as a crime fighter,” Wike said, adding that Disu later served as Commissioner of Police in the FCT Command during his tenure as minister, where he strengthened security operations across the territory.

Disu’s confirmation comes barely a week after President Tinubu appointed him Acting IGP following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.

Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos State, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police. Now 59, he holds multiple qualifications in public administration, forensic investigation, criminology, security, legal psychology and entrepreneurship.

The Presidency said his academic and professional background reflects a commitment to knowledge-driven and modern policing.

Before his latest appointment, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit and the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Lagos.

Like his predecessor, Disu worked closely with President Tinubu during his tenure as Lagos State governor between 1999 and 2007. While Egbetokun served as Chief Security Officer, Disu was appointed as Aide-de-Camp.
