Workers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have joined millions of their counterparts across Nigeria and beyond to mark the 2025 International Workers’ Day, popularly known as May Day.
The colourful celebration is currently underway at Eagle Square, Abuja, where workers from various sectors are gathered, proudly dressed in vibrant attires representing their professions and trades. The event, which serves as a platform to honour the contributions of workers to national development, is drawing large crowds despite heightened security measures.
Personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have been deployed to strategic points within and around Eagle Square to ensure a peaceful and orderly celebration. Security checks are being conducted at entry points, with strict access control in place.
A major highlight of the day is the address expected from the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC). Labour leaders will speak on pressing issues affecting Nigerian workers, including calls for improved welfare packages, better working conditions, and the implementation of the new national minimum wage.
As of the time of this report, it remains uncertain whether President Bola Tinubu or Vice President Kashim Shettima will be in attendance. This year’s May Day celebration marks the second under the Tinubu-led administration.
May Day, observed annually on May 1st, is an opportunity for workers worldwide to celebrate labour rights achievements and advocate for improved workplace policies.
