The ECOWAS Commission’s Department of Economic Affairs and Agriculture convened a strategic consultative meeting to finalize plans for the official launch of the ECOWAS Business Council (EBC)—a major step toward strengthening private sector participation in West Africa’s economic development.

The internal meeting, attended by directors and representatives from key ECOWAS directorates, focused on reviewing the EBC’s framework, previously approved by the Authority of Heads of State and Government, and charting a clear roadmap for its formal inauguration later in 2025.

Dr. Tony Luka Elumelu, Director of Private Sector and representative of Commissioner Massandjé Touré-Litse, emphasized that the EBC will serve as the region’s highest private-sector advisory body. He noted that all foundational steps have been completed, including the establishment of a screening committee tasked with enforcing strict membership criteria to ensure that only top-tier business entities are admitted.

“This consultative meeting is a vital opportunity to draw on collective expertise to ensure the EBC is inclusive, effective, and truly representative of the regional business landscape,” Elumelu said. Participants were encouraged to offer candid feedback and innovative suggestions to shape a council that addresses the unique challenges of West African enterprises.

In his opening remarks, Director of Trade, Mr. Kolawole Sofola, lauded the Program Directorate for advancing the EBC initiative, adding that ECOWAS, like other Regional Economic Communities (RECs), is now poised to establish a robust platform that champions private sector interests and regional integration.

Mr. Chris Appiah, ECOWAS Director for Transport, echoed the importance of the EBC, calling for a permanent channel of dialogue between ECOWAS directorates and the Council to ensure continuous engagement on key business issues.

The EBC is expected to play a transformative role in fostering economic growth, attracting investment, and enhancing regional competitiveness—positioning the private sector as a central driver of West Africa’s development agenda.
