The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that more than 10 people have died, 24 passengers rescued, and at least 42 still missing following the Kogi boat accident that occurred on the River Niger earlier this week.
According to an official update released on Thursday, the tragic incident took place on Tuesday evening when a boat carrying approximately 80 passengers capsized between Onugwa community in Ibaji Local Government Area and Olushi village.
“The unfortunate mishap has claimed several lives and left dozens missing,” NEMA said in its statement posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Rescue Efforts Ongoing
NEMA officials, along with community divers, are actively involved in ongoing search and rescue operations. As of the latest update, 14 bodies have been recovered, and efforts are continuing to locate the remaining missing passengers.
Teams from KOSEMA (Kogi State Emergency Management Agency), NIWA (National Inland Waterways Authority), the Nigerian Red Cross, Civil Defence Corps, and the Fire Service have joined the mission to aid survivors and recover bodies.
The Director General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar, has activated the agency’s Abuja Operations Office to support the local rescue teams. The Head of the Abuja Operations Office, Zakari Abubakar, also visited the Onugwa traditional ruler to express condolences and coordinate community-based support.
Background of the Incident
The ill-fated boat had departed Onugwa and was en route to Olushi village when it capsized under yet-to-be-confirmed circumstances. The River Niger, a major waterway in Nigeria, is frequently used for local transport in riverine communities, though such routes are often poorly regulated.
Periodic Updates Promised
NEMA has assured the public that regular updates will be provided as the operation progresses and more information becomes available.
