Adebayo Olugbenga Adedamola has been elected as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the August 2026 Osun State election.

Adedamola won the party’s primary on Tuesday at Adolak Hall in Osogbo, securing 919 votes after his only opponent, Governor Ademola Adeleke, withdrew from the race and formally resigned from the PDP on the eve of the exercise.

Announcing the results, Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Humphrey Abba, stated that 20 votes were invalid, noting that Adeleke’s withdrawal left Adedamola as the sole aspirant.

“The candidate that got the remaining votes is Adebayo Adedamola with 919 votes and stands elected and returned,” Abba declared.

The committee’s secretary, Sunday Solarin, explained that Adeleke’s resignation came too late to remove his name from the ballot, as the announcement was made on Monday night—too close to the primary to print new ballot papers.

He added that delegates were informed that Adedamola was the only valid contender and that any vote cast for Adeleke would be considered void.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the Osun governorship election for August 8, 2026, and political parties are expected to submit the names of their candidates in preparation for the poll.
