The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed as false reports claiming that it has released the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Election.
In a statement issued on Friday and signed by the Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, the Commission described the reports as misleading and urged the public to disregard them.
“INEC has not released any timetable or schedule of activities for the 2027 General Election,” the statement said.
INEC stressed that it operates strictly within the confines of the law, particularly Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which mandates the Commission to publish a notice of election not later than 360 days before the date appointed for a general election.
According to the Commission, any timetable or schedule circulated outside this statutory provision “cannot emanate from INEC.”
The electoral body assured Nigerians that the official timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Election would be released in due course and in full compliance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and the Electoral Act.
It added that once released, the information would be communicated through INEC’s verified and established channels.
INEC also cautioned the media and the general public against spreading unverified information, urging them to rely solely on the Commission’s official platforms for accurate and authoritative updates.
Meanwhile, in his New Year message on Friday, Prof. Amupitan reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to conducting transparent, credible, and inclusive elections in 2027, noting that early preparatory steps were already underway to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system.
He described the year ahead as a period of fresh beginnings and a critical phase for reinforcing institutional structures in preparation for the next general elections.
Reflecting on the Commission’s activities in 2025, the INEC Chairman commended staff for their dedication and professionalism, citing the successful conduct of the Anambra State governorship election, which took place shortly after he assumed office on October 23.
According to him, the exercise demonstrated that with discipline, unity, and professionalism, INEC remains capable of safeguarding the integrity of the vote and boosting public confidence in the electoral process.
