Nigeria’s Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has completed a high-profile move from Italian side Atalanta to Spanish giants Atletico Madrid, following an agreement between both clubs.
The 28-year-old winger, known for his pace, versatility and direct attacking style, signed a long-term contract with the former La Liga champions, with the transfer reportedly valued at around €40 million ($47.5 million), according to European media.
Atletico Madrid confirmed the signing in a statement on Tuesday, describing Lookman as “a dynamic attacking player who brings experience, speed and goal threat to Diego Simeone’s squad.”
“Ademola Lookman is now officially an Atletico Madrid player after reaching an agreement with Atalanta,” the club said. “He strengthens our attacking options ahead of the decisive phase of the season.”
Lookman rose to continental prominence after scoring a sensational hat-trick to lead Atalanta to a Europa League triumph over Bayer Leverkusen two seasons ago — a performance that cemented his reputation as one of Serie A’s most dangerous wide forwards.
Although he has found the net just three times in 19 appearances across all competitions this season, Atletico coach Diego Simeone has pushed for attacking reinforcements amid a challenging campaign.
The Rojiblancos have struggled for goals in recent weeks, with striker Julián Álvarez currently on an 11-game La Liga goal drought. Simeone has also had to reshuffle his squad following Giacomo Raspadori’s departure to Atalanta and Conor Gallagher’s move to Tottenham earlier in the winter transfer window.
A source close to the Madrid club said Lookman’s arrival was a priority for Simeone.
“Diego wanted a player who could operate across the front line and bring energy in one-on-one situations,” the source said. “Lookman fits that profile perfectly.”
Born in London, Lookman began his professional career at Charlton Athletic before earning a move to Everton. He later joined RB Leipzig, with loan spells at Fulham and Leicester City, before revitalising his career in Italy with Atalanta.
Now set for a new chapter in Spain, Lookman is expected to provide much-needed attacking spark as Atletico push for domestic and European success.
