Frank Lampard’s Coventry City moved closer to securing promotion to the Premier League for the first time in 25 years after a thrilling 3-2 victory over Derby County on Friday.

Substitute Jack Rudoni was the hero of the night, scoring twice to seal the win as Coventry extended their lead at the top of the Championship table to 11 points.

Frank Onyeka had earlier given Coventry the lead after 12 minutes. However, Ben Brereton Díaz equalised twice for Derby, either side of Rudoni’s first goal shortly after coming on in the second half.

Rudoni eventually secured victory with a decisive header 10 minutes from time in a five-goal encounter. The result also moved Coventry 12 points clear of third-placed Middlesbrough with just six matches remaining.

Meanwhile, Millwall climbed into second place after a 2-1 win over Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium. Josh Coburn scored twice in the second half to overturn an earlier lead by Dael Fry, boosting Millwall’s hopes of reaching the top flight for the first time in the Premier League era.

Millwall manager Alex Neil praised Coburn’s performance, describing his winning goal as a memorable moment.

Elsewhere, fourth-placed Ipswich Town were not in action, with their opponents Southampton involved in FA Cup quarter-final action against Arsenal.

Wrexham fought back from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw against West Bromwich Albion, keeping their hopes of a fourth consecutive promotion alive.

At Bristol City, veteran manager Roy Hodgson marked his return with a 2-1 victory over Charlton Athletic, 44 years after his first spell with the club.

At the bottom of the table, Leicester City edged closer to relegation despite a 2-2 draw against Preston North End, with Patson Daka scoring twice to salvage a point.

Portsmouth’s late equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Norwich City left Leicester one point adrift of safety, while Blackburn Rovers boosted their survival hopes with a 1-0 win over Birmingham City.
