Seven injured as two-storey building under construction collapses in Abuja

Seven persons have been injured following the collapse of a two-storey building under construction in Abuja.

The incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. on Friday in Jikwoyi, within the Abuja Municipal Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Construction workers present at the site at the time were among those affected.

According to a statement issued by Nkechi Isa, Head of Public Affairs at the FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD), rescue operations were immediately activated to ensure that no victims were trapped beneath the debris.

The agency’s Search and Rescue Team reported that 17 workers were on the upper floor when the structure gave way. Five of them sustained injuries, while another worker at ground level was initially trapped but later rescued.

“All the injured workers, including the rescued victim, have been taken to the Sisters of Nativity Hospital and are responding to treatment,” the statement added.

Emergency responders at the scene included officials from FEMD, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Department of Development Control, the Engineering Department of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Federal Fire Service, and the FCT Police Command.

FEMD further stated that excavation efforts were ongoing at the site to ground level to confirm that no additional victims remained trapped.
