Lagos-based clergyman, Kingsley Okonkwo, has stated that there is no biblical scripture that forbids a Christian from having tattoos.
Over the weekend, the popular pastor, widely known for his relationship teachings and sermons, shared a video of himself getting a tattoo.
The video sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerian Christians criticizing his decision. Critics argued that tattoos were ungodly and inappropriate for Christians, especially for a cleric.
Responding to the backlash during an interview, Okonkwo said there is neither biblical nor scientific evidence to support the claim that tattoos are sinful or indicative of bad character.
He explained that many religious leaders and believers often impose personal opinions, church traditions, or individual convictions on others without solid justification.
According to him, the opposition to tattoos is largely based on assumptions rather than facts.
“There is no scripture that says a child of God cannot have a tattoo,” Okonkwo said. “People keep saying tattoos are bad, yet no one can explain why. There is no scriptural proof, no scientific proof, just assumptions.”
