The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reported that a total of 10,446 road traffic crasheswere recorded across Nigeria in 2025, representing a nine per cent increase compared to figures from 2024.
The FRSC Corps Marshal, Mallam Shehu Mohammed, disclosed this while addressing journalists in Abuja during the launch of the 2025 Ember Months Campaign. He, however, noted a decline in fatalities resulting from road crashes, stating that the number of deaths dropped from 5,421 in 2024 to 5,289 in 2025, indicating a 2.4 per cent reduction.
According to him, the increase in reported crashes was partly due to intensified enforcement activities, which also led to a higher number of traffic offenders being apprehended nationwide. He attributed the reduction in fatalities to improved rescue operations and stricter enforcement of traffic rules and regulations.
Mallam Shehu Mohammed identified the Kaduna–Zaria–Kano–Katsina, Abuja–Zuba–Lokoja, and Jos–Bauchi–Gombe corridors as recording the highest number of road crashes. He linked this trend to high traffic volume and poor road user behaviour, particularly among commercial drivers.
The FRSC boss announced that all commands have been directed to establish Crash Intelligence Desks and increase the deployment of personnel to identified high-risk traffic corridors across the country.
He further stated that the Corps would intensify focus on the “Big Five” traffic offences, which account for over 70 per cent of fatal and serious crashes. These offences include speed violation, dangerous driving, drunk or drug-impaired driving, wrong-way driving, and overloading.
Mallam Shehu Mohammed added that the Corps would strengthen its public enlightenment efforts in 2025 by shifting from general awareness campaigns to behavioural change communication, with targeted messaging for commercial drivers, private motorists, motorcyclists, and fleet operators, anchored on real-life consequences.
He emphasized the need for religious leaders, community leaders, and opinion leaders to support grassroots education on the dangers of reckless driving and its impact on socio-economic development.
The Corps Marshal also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support, saying it has significantly enhanced FRSC operations nationwide.
“I wish to place on record the deep appreciation of the Corps to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his unwavering support, strategic guidance, and policy backing extended to the Federal Road Safety Corps,” he said.
He also acknowledged the support of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, noting that collective backing has strengthened the Corps’ capacity, professionalism, and effectiveness.
Mallam Shehu Mohammed urged stakeholders in the transport sector and motorists to obey traffic rules and cooperate fully with the FRSC to ensure effective traffic management across the country.
