An FCT High Court sitting in Abuja has convicted and sentenced a former Managing Director of the Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM), Robert Orya, to a cumulative 490 years’ in prison over a ₦2.4 billion fraud.
The conviction was secured by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday, February 5, 2026, after a prolonged trial linked to financial crimes allegedly committed during Orya’s tenure as NEXIM Managing Director between 2011 and 2016.
Delivering judgment, Justice F. E. Messiri found Orya guilty on 49 counts bordering on fraud, criminal breach of trust, misappropriation, impersonation, official corruption, and abuse of office.
The court sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment on each count, bringing the total sentence to 490 years.
In a statement confirming the verdict, the EFCC disclosed that Orya was prosecuted by Samuel Ugwuegbulam and convicted for defrauding the Nigerian Export-Import Bank of approximately ₦2.4 billion.
Orya was first arraigned on November 25, 2021, before the FCT High Court in Apo, Abuja. The anti-graft agency alleged that he abused his position as managing director to unlawfully obtain over ₦1.368 billion from the bank.
The court upheld the EFCC’s case, ruling that the prosecution had successfully proven the charges beyond reasonable doubt.
