Residents of Doma Tafoki Ward in Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State gathered in solemn grief to observe funeral prayers for victims of a deadly bandit attack that rocked the community.
The assault, allegedly carried out by suspected armed bandits loyal to the notorious Isiya Kwashen Garwa, left scores dead, many injured, and several homes destroyed.
While police authorities confirmed that 13 people were killed, local government officials placed the death toll much higher.
Chairman of Faskari Local Government Area, Bala Ado, said more than 20 residents lost their lives in the coordinated attack.
“What we recorded here is beyond what anyone should experience. Over 20 of our people were killed, many sustained injuries, and properties were destroyed. These were innocent civilians whose only crime was living in their homes,” Ado told reporters.
According to residents, the attackers stormed the community in large numbers, setting houses and a Golf 3 vehicle ablaze before fleeing.
Security forces, including Army troops under Operation FANSAN YANMA, the Nigeria Police, and Civilian Watch patrol teams, swiftly moved into the area, blocking major escape routes in a bid to track down the perpetrators.
The Nigeria Air Force also joined the operation, reportedly neutralising 27 armed bandits during aerial engagements.
A police source confirmed the coordinated response, saying security agencies are intensifying efforts to prevent further attacks in the area.
“Our operatives responded immediately, cordoned off exit routes, and pursued the attackers. We are working with other security agencies to restore calm and ensure those responsible are brought to justice,” the source said.
At the prayer ground, grieving families, community leaders, and Islamic clerics offered special prayers for the departed, asking Almighty Allah to forgive their shortcomings and grant them Aljannah.
Local clerics described the victims as martyrs, urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as investigations continue.
The attack has once again highlighted the persistent security challenges facing rural communities in Katsina State, despite ongoing military operations against armed groups in the North-West.
