The Lagos State Commissioner of Police has responded to activist Omoyele Sowore, stressing that the human rights activist had no moral or legal standing to question the competence of the police leadership in the state.
Reacting to Sowore’s recent comments in an interview, the Commissioner defended his performance, stating that he had served diligently for over nine months and maintained a high standard of professionalism in the discharge of his duties.
“During Sowore‘s interview, he said the Commissioner of Police is not competent. I am very competent. I’ve been here for more than nine months. Even in court, when an accused person behaves well, the prosecution can still highlight his past misconduct,“ he said.
The Commissioner went further to allege that Sowore does not possess a valid National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate, claiming that although the activist was posted to Adamawa State, he failed to complete the one-year mandatory service.
“I want to make it clear that Sowore doesn’t have an NYSC certificate. He was posted to Adamawa and never did his service. Such a person cannot be the one calling others miscreants or disturbing the peace of Lagos. We won’t allow it,” he declared.
The police comments have since stirred widespread debate online. While some social media users urged the police to provide evidence to substantiate the NYSC allegations, others called for restraint and urged both parties to avoid unnecessary public confrontation.
As of the time of this report, Omoyele Sowore has not issued an official response to the Commissioner’s remarks.
