A fire outbreak razed an open-space recycling site in Abule Egba, Lagos, damaging nearby properties before firefighters brought the situation under control.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said it received a distress call prompting the immediate deployment of firefighters from the Agege and Abesan fire stations to the affected area.

Preliminary findings indicated that the inferno started from an open space used for local recycling activities, reportedly operated by some individuals. The fire later spread to a nearby residential bungalow and a mini church, causing varying degrees of damage.

An adult female reportedly suffered shock during the incident but was promptly attended to and stabilised by emergency responders at the scene. No fatalities were recorded.

Confirming the development, the Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs Margaret Adeseye, said the fire had been successfully extinguished and normalcy restored in the area.

“The fire has been completely put out, and our officers are currently conducting investigations to determine the exact cause of the incident,” Adeseye said.

She reiterated the agency’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state, urging residents to comply strictly with fire safety regulation.

“We advise residents and operators of such facilities to adhere to safety standards to prevent avoidable incidents like this,” she added.

Authorities said further details would be made public after the conclusion of investigations.
