The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, has called on Nigerians traveling or residing abroad to prioritize registering with Nigerian embassies and consulates in their host countries. He said this step is crucial for timely government intervention during emergencies and to avoid misinformation that could harm the country’s reputation.
Ambassador Ahmed made the appeal while receiving a delegation from the Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DICAN), led by its Chairman, Mr. Idehai Frederick, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
Referencing a recent incident involving Nigerians stranded in the Central African Republic, the Permanent Secretary lamented attempts by individuals on social media to discredit the Ministry’s efforts. He emphasized that many such crises could be better managed if Nigerians notify missions of their presence upon arrival rather than waiting until trouble arises.
“This simple step of registering can prevent misunderstandings and help ensure Nigerians receive the necessary support in times of need,” he said.
He further explained that the Ministry, alongside embassies and consulates, is committed to safeguarding Nigerians abroad but stressed the need for cooperation and proactive communication from citizens.
Ambassador Ahmed also underscored the importance of timely and accurate information dissemination. He advocated for a closer partnership between the Ministry and DICAN to effectively tackle disinformation and promote Nigeria’s image globally.
“We are saddled with the responsibility of managing the country’s image. A strategic collaboration with DICAN will help ensure that the right narratives are shared both locally and internationally,” he noted.
He praised DICAN for organizing its inaugural Diplomatic and Security International Conference, which brought together over seventy participants, including diplomats, intelligence experts, academics, and civil society actors, to discuss global security and Nigeria’s foreign policy direction.
Describing the event as potentially record-breaking, Ambassador Ahmed said it had significantly contributed to discussions on national security and President Bola Tinubu’s 4Ds foreign policy thrust — Democracy, Development, Demography, and Diaspora.
“The conference enriched global security dialogue and positioned Nigeria positively in the international community,” he added.
In his remarks, DICAN Chairman Mr. Idehai Frederick presented an Award of Excellence to the Permanent Secretary in recognition of his leadership and support for the association’s work. He also called for more backing from the Ministry to enhance DICAN’s agenda-setting role in shaping Nigeria’s diplomatic narrative.
“The Permanent Secretary has shown sincere commitment to engaging with the media, and we look forward to deeper collaboration in the service of our nation,” Mr. Frederick said.
