The Federal Ministry of Education has debunked reports suggesting an immediate policy shift to abolish the Junior and Senior Secondary School (JSS and SSS) system, stating that the proposed 12-year basic education plan is still under review.
In a statement released on Friday, the Director of Press, Folasade Boriowo, clarified that Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, merely introduced the idea for discussion at an Extraordinary National Council on Education (NCE) meeting on February 6, 2025.
“The Honourable Minister presented a proposal for consideration, not an immediate policy change. The aim is to introduce 12 years of compulsory education while maintaining the existing 6-3-3 structure,” the statement read.
A key aspect of the proposal is to remove the examination requirement between JSS and SSS, allowing students to progress seamlessly. However, the ministry emphasized that this remains a subject of consultation.
Over the next eight months, the government will engage education policymakers, state authorities, teachers, and parents before a final decision is made at the NCE meeting in October 2025.
The ministry urged the public to disregard misleading reports, reaffirming the government’s commitment to policies that improve education access and align with global best practices.
