In a major step toward strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the employment of 774 National Health Fellows. The initiative, spearheaded by the Federal Ministry of Health, aims to drive sustained improvements in the country’s health sector.
President Tinubu made the announcement on Thursday during the official launch of the programme at the State House in Abuja. The event was attended by key stakeholders, including development partners, senior government officials, and traditional leaders such as the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III.
The selection of the 774 fellows—one from each local government area—was based on merit, following a rigorous process that screened 360,000 applicants. Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, praised the initiative, emphasizing that only the most qualified candidates were chosen.
Addressing the newly recruited fellows, President Tinubu highlighted the transformative nature of the programme and the critical role young Nigerians play in the nation’s development.
“This initiative underscores my administration’s commitment to unlocking the potential of our greatest asset—our young people. With over 60% of Nigerians under 30, we have one of the most dynamic youth populations in the world. This presents unparalleled opportunities for innovation, economic growth, and social transformation,” he stated.
The President urged the fellows to seize the opportunity and see themselves as future leaders of Nigeria’s healthcare system. He reiterated his administration’s dedication to ensuring equal opportunities for all, regardless of social status, gender, or creed.
“You are not just employees; you are the future of our healthcare system. Your selection reflects our vision for a healthier, more prosperous Nigeria,” Tinubu added.
Professor Pate echoed the President’s sentiments, emphasizing that the initiative marks the beginning of a nationwide movement to enhance healthcare delivery.
“This is more than just a recruitment drive. It is a social movement aimed at transforming the health sector, and we are already seeing positive results,” he said.
Finance Minister Wale Edun, Youth Minister Ayodele Olawande, and the Olu of Warri also delivered inspiring messages, encouraging the fellows to embrace their roles with dedication.
With this strategic move, the Tinubu administration is taking concrete steps to address Nigeria’s healthcare challenges by investing in a new generation of health leaders poised to drive innovation and long-term improvements.
