The Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) has officially submitted an expression of interest to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, beating the March 28, 2025 deadline set by the Commonwealth Games Federation.
The move signals Nigeria’s renewed ambition to bring the prestigious multi-sport event to its capital city, Abuja. However, the NOC clarified that a formal bid can only be pursued with the endorsement and backing of the federal government.
“Nigeria’s intention to host the 2030 Games presents a unique opportunity to highlight our national development, elevate our global image, and reignite our sporting culture,” said NOC spokesperson Tony Nezianya in an official statement.
Abuja last hosted a major continental sporting event in 2003, when the city welcomed athletes from across Africa for the African Games. That experience, the NOC believes, forms a solid foundation for Nigeria’s bid.
“Our successful management of the 2003 African Games proves our readiness. Hosting the Commonwealth Games would further demonstrate Nigeria’s capabilities in logistics, hospitality, and infrastructure,” the statement noted.
Nigeria previously lost out in its bid to host the 2014 Games, which were awarded to Glasgow, Scotland. Interestingly, Glasgow is set to step in again as host for the 2026 edition after Australia’s Victoria state withdrew due to escalating costs.
The NOC sees this fresh attempt as an opportunity not just for sporting glory, but as a compelling narrative of national progress and preparedness on the global stage.
