World football governing body FIFA has officially approved the change of international allegiance for goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo from England to Nigeria.

The decision, confirmed on FIFA’s Change of Association platform on April 6, 2026, makes the 24-year-old eligible to represent the Super Eagles.

Checks show that Okonkwo’s new national association has been updated to the Nigeria Football Federation, replacing his former affiliation with The Football Association.

Born on September 9, 2001, in Camden, London, to Nigerian (Igbo) parents, Okonkwo began his football journey at Arsenal FC’s academy at the age of eight. He went on to represent England at youth levels, featuring for the U-15, U-16, U-17, and U-18 teams between 2015 and 2019.

However, he never earned a senior cap for England, making him eligible to switch allegiance under FIFA rules.

Okonkwo is currently the first-choice goalkeeper for Wrexham AFC in the EFL Championship, following his permanent move from Arsenal. He has delivered impressive performances this season, making crucial saves and playing a key role in the club’s campaign.

His consistent form has attracted attention as a strong addition to Nigeria’s goalkeeping department.

The switch reportedly followed discussions with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle during the Unity Cup in London last year. However, administrative processes prevented him from featuring at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Okonkwo’s inclusion is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s goalkeeping options, alongside established names such as Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye.
