Tension gripped the Benin Republic early Sunday morning, 7 December 2025, when a group of mutineers attempted to overthrow the government in a surprise attack targeting the country’s National Television station.
At the center of the unrest was Colonel Pascal Tigri, identified as the leader of the rogue soldiers who briefly seized the broadcaster before security forces intervened.
President Tinubu’s aide, Bayo Onanuga
took to his twitter account to say, Colonel Tigri is currently on the run, prompting an intensive manhunt by Beninese authorities.
According to Onanuga, several members of his group had already been arrested as the country’s defence and security forces moved swiftly to disrupt the attempted putsch.
Interior Minister Alassane Seidou addressed the nation in a televised statement, confirming that the coup attempt had been fully aborted.
He detailed how a “small group of soldiers launched a mutiny aimed at destabilising the state and its institutions,” but emphasized that the loyal armed forces responded promptly and effectively.
“True to their oath, the Beninese armed forces and their leadership remained committed to the republic,” Seidou announced. “Their response allowed them to retain control of the situation and foil the attempt.”
The Minister urged citizens to remain calm and continue with their daily activities, assuring the public that the security situation was under control.
As the hunt for Colonel Tigri continues, the government has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding national stability and preserving democratic institutions.
