Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the swearing-in ceremony of President Alassane Ouattara, who will be inaugurated for a fourth term on Monday, December 8, 2025.
Ouattara secured re-election on October 2 with a landslide victory, earning 89.77% of the vote.
Shettima arrived in Abidjan on Sunday and was welcomed by Côte d’Ivoire’s Prime Minister, Robert Mambe; the Chargé d’Affaires of the Nigerian Embassy, Mrs. Item Akpama; and other top government officials.
According to Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications to the Vice President, Shettima will join several African leaders and international dignitaries at the inauguration ceremony scheduled to take place at the Presidential Palace in Abidjan.
Shettima’s attendance highlights Nigeria’s continued support for democratic governance in West Africa and its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Côte d’Ivoire.
“At this inauguration, VP Shettima will once again reaffirm Nigeria’s dedication to promoting democratic values, respecting the will of the people, and ensuring that constitutional processes remain the foundation of leadership transitions across the region,” the statement noted.
In a statement, the visit reinforces Nigeria’s longstanding partnership with Côte d’Ivoire. Both countries collaborate closely through ECOWAS and the African Union on issues such as regional security, trade, and socioeconomic development.
Their cooperation is further reinforced by a Bi-National Commission and several agreements addressing human trafficking, agriculture, and digital-economy growth.
A significant Nigerian community residing in Côte d’Ivoire continues to promote strong economic and social ties between the two nations.
Vice President Shettima is expected to return to Abuja after the conclusion of the inauguration ceremony.
