President Bola Tinubu has appointed Professor Attahiru Muhammadu Jega, former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as Special Adviser and Coordinator of the Presidential Livestock Reform Initiative.
The appointment is aimed at advancing sustainable reforms in Nigeria’s livestock sector, a key area of the administration’s national development strategy.
Jega’s Role in Livestock Reform
Professor Jega, a former Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, previously co-chaired the Presidential Livestock Reform Committee alongside President Tinubu. The committee’s work led to several key recommendations, including the establishment of the Livestock Ministry to address challenges in the sector.
A statement from Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed that Jega’s appointment will build on the committee’s progress, ensuring the effective implementation of livestock policies.
Jega’s Experience and Background
At 68, Jega brings extensive governance and administrative experience to his new role. He currently serves as:
Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education, Kano.
A member of the International Elections Advisory Council.
Jega is best known for his tenure as INEC Chairman (2010–2015), during which he oversaw Nigeria’s landmark 2015 general elections.
