UNIAbuja appoints Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi as new Vice-Chancellor

The Governing Council of Yakubu Gowon University (formerly known as the University of Abuja) has approved the appointment of Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi as the substantive Vice-Chancellorof the institution.

According to a statement signed by the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Dr. Habib Yakoob, the announcement was made during the 80th Extraordinary Meeting of the University Council.

Professor Fawehinmi’s appointment will take effect from February 10, 2026, for a single, non-renewable five-year tenure.

A distinguished scholar, Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi is a Professor of Clinical Anatomy and Biomedical Anthropology. He currently serves as the Vice-Chancellor of the Nigerian British University, Asa, in Abia State.

The Council also approved the extension of tenure for the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mathew Adamu, who will continue to lead the university until February 10, 2026, when the substantive Vice-Chancellor formally assumes office.

Professor Adamu was first appointed by the Federal Government on August 11, 2025.
