Gunmen have shot dead a Mexican journalist in the eastern state of Veracruz, in what authorities describe as the latest attack in one of the world’s most dangerous environments for the press.

The victim, Carlos Castro, was a crime reporter with local news outlet Código Norte Veracruz. He was killed while dining at a restaurant in the city of Poza Rica, according to reports by Mexican media and the digital platform RECORD.

Eyewitnesses said armed men opened fire on Castro before fleeing the scene. No arrests have been made as of the time of filing this report.

The State Commission for the Attention and Protection of Journalists, an autonomous body of the Veracruz regional government, confirmed the incident and called for a full investigation.

“We demand a thorough and transparent investigation into this crime, and that those responsible be identified and brought to justice,” the commission said in a statement.

Castro was known for his reporting on crime and public security issues in the region, an area long plagued by violence linked to organised crime.

Mexico remains one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists. According to Reporters Without Borders (RSF), more than 150 journalists have been murdered in the country since 1994, many of them targeted for their work.

Veracruz, which borders the Gulf of Mexico, has been particularly affected by cartel-related violence, as criminal groups battle for control of key drug trafficking routes.

Press freedom advocates say the continued killings highlight the urgent need for stronger protections for journalists and an end to impunity.

“The murder of Carlos Castro is another tragic reminder of the risks journalists face simply for doing their jobs,” an RSF spokesperson said. “Authorities must act swiftly to ensure justice is served.”
