Popular skit maker and content creator Deacon Famous has spoken publicly about the circumstances surrounding his fallout with actress and former close friend Ekene Umenwa, explaining that he chose silence at the time to protect his peace, particularly as the dispute coincided with his wedding period.
According to Deacon Famous, he deliberately refrained from responding to the controversy because his wife advised him to stay quiet and avoid distractions that could disrupt their wedding preparations. He said his decision was motivated by a desire for a calm, drama-free season.
He dismissed online speculation suggesting that his wife was involved in the disagreement, stressing that she had no issues with Ekene Umenwa.
He described his wife as calm, non-confrontational, and uninterested in social media drama, insisting that the matter was strictly between him and the actress.
Deacon Famous explained that the tension began after a private conversation he had with Umenwa the night before the controversy became public.
He alleged that during the discussion, she spoke strongly against a particular individual—believed to be his former girlfriend, accusing the person of harbouring ill intentions toward his wedding.
However, he said he was taken aback when the following day, the same individual was publicly celebrated by Umenwa on social media with warm birthday messages. Confused by what he described as a contradiction, Deacon Famous said he reached out to her privately to seek clarification.
He claimed that instead of responding directly, Umenwa screenshot his message and shared it with others, including her husband and a priest. He expressed disappointment that the priest, whom he expected to remain neutral, appeared to side with the actress.
According to him, the only person who made a genuine effort to resolve the situation was Umenwa’s mother, who reportedly reached out to calm tensions between both parties.
Deacon Famous also spoke about a movie project he said he developed specifically with Umenwa in mind, based on their close friendship. He claimed that after her wedding, the project experienced repeated delays.
When filming was eventually agreed upon, with Asaba chosen as the location, he said he relocated his entire production crew and covered logistics and accommodation expenses.
However, he alleged that the project collapsed after Umenwa’s husband informed him that she had accepted another production scheduled for the same dates.
He further stated that although they later reconciled and Umenwa apologised while she was heavily pregnant abroad, the experience had already taken an emotional toll on him. While he said he forgave her and continued to support her, the damage, according to him, had been done.
Deacon Famous claimed he was subjected to intense online backlash as a result of what he described as false narratives spread by someone he trusted. He further alleged that the actress paid a blogger ₦200,000 to publish damaging stories about him.
He also recalled that during his proposal period, Umenwa questioned whether he truly understood the woman he intended to marry, but he said he stood by his decision.
Now, a year later, Deacon Famous says he has forgiven but cannot forget the emotional strain of that period, which included online attacks, hostile comment sections, and what he described as unfair criticism directed at his wife.
He emphasised that his silence at the time was intentional and aimed at preserving his marriage and peace of mind, adding that he has now decided to share his side of the story to set the record straight.
