The President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, on 7 July 2025, hosted Dr. Robert Floyd, Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), at the Commission’s Headquarters in Abuja, in a strategic meeting aimed at deepening cooperation in scientific monitoring, peacebuilding, and disaster risk reduction across West Africa.
The high-level engagement celebrated West Africa’s full ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) and the region’s vital contributions to the International Monitoring System through six certified stations. Both parties discussed enhanced technical collaboration in the use of seismic data, early warning mechanisms, and capacity-building programmes to address environmental and security challenges.
President Touray reaffirmed ECOWAS’ dedication to science-based policy solutions, stressing that innovation must support sustainable peace, protect ecosystems, and build regional resilience. He welcomed CTBTO’s continued partnership and highlighted the shared commitment to leveraging global expertise for the safety and development of ECOWAS Member States, in line with the Vision 2050 agenda.
This collaboration reflects ECOWAS’ growing role in global peace and security frameworks and underlines the relevance of strategic partnerships in strengthening the region’s preparedness for both natural and man-made threats.
