Abuja, July 9, 2025 — After more than three months of industrial action, primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have officially suspended their strike and will return to classrooms today, Wednesday, July 9.

The announcement was made in a communiqué issued by the FCT chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) following an emergency meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday, July 8. The union cited the payment of the new minimum wage and five months of salary arrears as the major reason for the decision to end the strike.

“All primary school teachers in the FCT are to resume duty on Wednesday,” the communiqué stated.

The strike, which began in March 2025, had severely disrupted academic activities in public primary schools across the territory.

According to the NUT, the breakthrough came after a series of negotiations and interventions led by the FCT Minister, who worked with stakeholders to resolve the prolonged deadlock. As part of the resolution, the FCT Administration released N16 billion from the Area Councils’ Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to pay the outstanding wages and a portion of accrued arrears.

The union added that a special committee will be formed within the next two weeks to reconcile all outstanding entitlements and develop a sustainable funding mechanism to avoid future disruptions.

However, the NUT issued a strong warning that it will not hesitate to resume the strike if the government defaults on its commitments.

The union also extended appreciation to its members for their perseverance and to traditional rulers, civil society groups, and community leaders who supported their cause throughout the impasse.
