The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified the events leading to the death of Endurance Udeke, a resident of Periwinkle Estate, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, during an anti-cybercrime operation on November 4, 2025.

According to a statement issued by the Commission, EFCC operatives had conducted a sting operation in the estate, which resulted in the arrest of four suspected internet fraudsters. The operation, the EFCC said, was conducted smoothly across all apartments.

However, during the exercise, Udeke and another resident of apartment W6a reportedly attempted to evade arrest by jumping from a four-storey building.

Tragically, Udeke sustained fatal injuries and, despite prompt medical interventions, did not survive. His co-resident, who also jumped, was later stabilized and treated in the hospital.

The EFCC emphasized that there was no physical contact between its operatives and the deceased before the incident occurred. The Commission said it immediately notified Udeke’s family, providing full details of the situation and the medical efforts made to save his life.

“The Commission is shocked by the suicidal action of the deceased,” the statement read, adding that the incident has been reported to the Police, which has since commenced an investigation.

While expressing sympathy to the bereaved family, the EFCC urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, stressing that no innocent person has any reason to fear during its sting operations.
