Police fire celebratory shots after Soludo wins Anambra governorship election

Police officers attached to Anambra State Governor, Charles Chukwuma Soludo reportedly fired celebratory gunshots into the air on Sunday shortly after he was officially declared winner of the Anambra State governorship election.

Governor Soludo, the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), secured a landslide victory, winning all 21 Local Government Areas in the state. According to official results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Soludo polled 422,664 votes, earning a second term in office.

His closest rival, Nicholas Ukachukwu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), came a distant second with 99,445 votes, while Paul Chukwuma of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) garnered 37,753 votes. Other candidates included George Moghalu of the Labour Party (LP), who scored 10,576 votes; John Nwosu of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), with 8,208 votes; and Jude Ezenwafor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who obtained 1,401 votes.

Moments after the State Returning Officer, Prof. Omoregie Edoba, Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, declared Soludo the winner, a video surfaced online showing police officers firing shots into the air at the governor’s residence in Isuofia, Aguata Local Government Area.

As of the time of filing this report, the Anambra State Police Command has not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
