President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally requested the Senate’s approval to deploy Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin as part of a regional peace-support initiative.

The request, presented to the upper chamber on Tuesday, follows an appeal from President Patrice Talon after a recent failed coup attempt in Benin. In his letter, President Tinubu stated that the troop deployment aims to support stability efforts and reinforce Benin’s authorities in accordance with existing regional security commitments.

The proposed action aligns with the protocols of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which require member nations to assist states experiencing unconstitutional changes of government. Nigeria had previously provided air support during the incident, further demonstrating its leadership role in promoting peace and security across the region.

The Senate is expected to review and deliberate on the President’s request before making a final decision.
